Rold Gold's Crunch Clusters

Just stumbled on this new product at a local retail shop. I was just going to walk right past it. But it certainly caught my attention and more.

The last time I was recommended to try a clustered junk snackie, I absolutely loved it! So, why not give this a go and see if it'll get my passing? ☺️

Not sure how new this product just is. But the fact I haven't seen this ever before. It's pretty new here in Canada.

It's a nice compact size to start off. You get 135g of these clusters. The best part is it comes with the resealable lock mechanism. Keeps your treat as fresh as it can be!

Once you open the bag, it's about half-filled. Size wise, they are rather small. Sharing the same circumference of the Canadian loonie coin. And no more than 1" in height.

Dome-ly shaped on top and flat on the bottom coated with about half an inch of milk chocolate. The coating is not consistent as sometimes you'll find one more than the other or the coating is not straight all around. But, hey! It's still clusters and chocolate. It can be coated entirely and I will still take it as is. I ain't complaining! 😜

The pretzel-peanut clusters are rather more solid than I thought. It definitely has a (hard) crunch (I actually tried biting it in half and it wasn't as easy as I thought, but definitely do-able!). So, if you have sensitive teeth, you've been warned!

It's definitely more sweet than salty in taste. You taste the peanut part more towards the end. And it looks more like a rice krispy cluster or a granola cluster than pretzels and peanuts.

Overall, I really like this product. Not sure how long they will be around for. But, I would definitely recommend it. Good job, Rold Gold! When this product picks up on the hype, I hope you'll consider launching a peanut butter dipped or dark chocolate dipped version  of this and have it available in Canada! It just makes sense!

Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake and more

So, I happened to have enough time to kill to check out what's the hype with Uncle Tetsu. Or so I thought I did.

Uncle Tetsu's Japanese Cheesecake is located at 598 Bat St., just north of Dundas on the west side.

It's a relatively small shop that oozes out freshly baked egg cake. Smelling so heavenly and divine! Just makes you hungry for something deliciously sweet!

I knew I would be standing in line for at least 1-hr to 1-1/2hrs. Little did I know, my entire wait time was 2-hrs and 5 mins. Wow!!! It definitely felt much longer than that. But you kind of get the sense that service was on the sluggish side. Please improve on this, as today was not your first day of opening (8th day, to exact).

I must warn you, please have cash available on you before you start lining up. They accept cash only for now.

For $10 (tax included; $8.88 each), you get a full 6" diameter Japanese cheesecake. And for $2.22 each, the madeleine is also available. Essentially, it's like a cupcake less the icing. And right now, if you buy 3 madeleine, you get 1 free.

And because the shop is still brand new, they limit 1 cheesecake per person and 1 order of 4 madeleines per person. If you're waiting in line for over 2-hrs, why not get in on the maximum?

After receiving our treats and a few hours later, I finally tried both products. Yay!

The cheesecake was little too moist in my opinion. However, it was quite soft for other kinds of Japanese cheesecakes that I've had. And it wasn't overly sweet which is always a plus.

The madeleine on the other note, it surprised me. Good surprise, of course! I like the almost-crispy top. And I find the sweetness matches the density of the treat! Two-thumbs up from me on this one!

In all honesty, I was disappointed that they didn't have the rusk cookies or the angel hat available. Perhaps, in 3 months time, I will make another trip. And hopefully by then, it wouldn't take me an over 2-hrs wait for these treats. That, or the limitation of cheesecakes and madeleines.

New York Café Restaurant Review

For the longest time, I have been wanting to visit this establishment. Always passing by, but never getting off the stop from the streetcar to pay a visit. Finally, one day I did. (Well, I didn't get off the streetcar because I came out of Broadview Subway Station instead)

New York Café Restaurant is located at 757 Broadview Ave., just a few steps south from Danforth Ave. on the east side.

A great offer, if you're dining with another person.

A place that has free wifi, even better.

Don't let the outside fool you. They are known to have some pretty amazing brunch dishes. And it's usually pretty packed and busy in there. A lot of hustlin' and bustlin'. We were there for lunch on a Saturday. And, it was pretty packed already.

Nothing fancy about the inside. It's something that you will come to expect at any diners. The front of the house was quite spacious, divided into two dining areas. It was surprisingly more brighter inside than I thought.

Normally, I would order something like a burger. But for the longest time, I have been craving for spaghetti and meatballs. Yes, I am usually very specific with my cravings. =)

My main came with a salad, the choices were: Cesar, Greek or Garden. I opted for Greek. Not because I'm dining near Greek Town, but because I will always say "yes" to Greek Salad. It tastes so good!

The salad was a nice start. Good portion. A bit of a good mix. The veggies were fresh. And the dressing was a bit on the thicker consistency.

Finally, my main came! And, my goodness, was I excited!

The spaghetti also came with garlic bread. I don't mind the extra toastiness.

The pasta was done perfectly. Coated with just the right amount of tomato sauce. I was so glad that it came with more than one meatball (3 pieces). The meatball itself was nice and firm. Tasted really great! I say, bring on the Parmesan cheese, please!

Overall, it was a very satisfying meal. Especially, factoring in with my cravings. Would I go there again? Of course! I think I might get an order that involves, say, egg bennies?! ;)

Classic Polvoron

Just a few days ago, a co-worker shared a lovely authentic snack from the Philippines with me.

From Red Ribbon Bake Shop, the Classic Polvoron is packaged neatly and individually by piece. It's more like a powdery biscuit with a nice smooth refined taste of milk. Not too overly sweet. And it has a nice crunch to it. Definitely, worth the try!

Patois, anyone?

What does that word "Patois" even mean? According to the resto's website, it derives from the native Jamaican language. Where it signifies the merging of great food ideas from various cultures. Essentially, it's just a really good mix of food fushion!

My latest food adventure visit was to Patois. Located at 794 Dundas St West, just about 2 blocks west of Bathurst on the north side.

My visit was called to come to this place because a friend of mine's on Facebook shared a link that feature the resto's "Prosperity Jerk Lobster" for a limited of time only. Hello? Jerk Lobster? Call me, please! (By the way, I've been hosting Lobster feasts on a close-to monthly/bi-monthly events. Where, there are more lobsters on the table than anything else)

So, you can book online or call. But booking online is far more easier, I opted for that. For more details, visit their website at: www.patoistoronto.com.

The resto's decor is a bit of everything. Everything that is fun and random! You have rustic, vintage, bright, and air floaters that you would find at a swimming pool.

Knowing me, I got there early to check out the place.

Our servers for the night was absolutely phenomenal! She was so personable and knowledgeable. So above and beyond, that one of my guests asked me, did we know each other from before? That's the type of service every diners should feel! Just simply wonderful.

My first disappointment was that, we got a table that was meant to seat four people, but we squeezed in five. I just wished we had gotten a table for six. Especially with what we ordered (and you'll be surprised too!), we were running out of table space!

We started off with drinks. Most of us ordered something off their special beverage menu. Go big or go home, right?

Three of us ordered the coconut rum, one of the three was virgin one. You literally get to drink out of a freshly opened coconut. NOTE: highly recommended to pour in all the rum. Pouring just a little or half, is clearly not enough for alcohol or to taste! I'm serious about this! #triedandfailed

One of us ordered a raspberry fizz (tea infused vodka), and the other a pint of Steamwhistle.

Now, it's time for FOOD! But wait -- we haven't even ordered any food yet, just drinks. My guests and I were debating what to order. So many things on the menu that just jumps out at us. We could have ordered The Whole Shebang for $99.99 (+ tax & tips). But we definitely wanted more than that.

In the end, you'll soon find out what we've order. We were definitely in for a feast!

First to arrive was an item under their Dinner Features + menu. Anything from
this list can change. The Jerk Chicken Chow Mein was the first to arrive. Tender pieces of chicken nicely coated to a tasty jerk sauce bedded on top crunchy fried noodles. After we all portioned it to everyone, we were surprised to see the bottom of the plate coated with a lot of the jerk sauce. At this very moment, a very Asian thought came to mind, "can I get a bowl of white rice with that?" A sauce that is that well-made, should not go to waste. #justsaying

The next thing came, from their regular menu and a must-try item (in my books!), The Pineapple Bun Burger. Yes, we ordered two of these. OMG!!! Who would've thought HK's pineapple bun could tasty so devine with two juicy beef meat patties! Holy moly! Hands down, one of the best of the nights! Personally, I wasn't so big on the onion ring. Too battered for my liking. But the burger, it was delectable!

Next came, supposingly, our starter...but we've already had two things arrived before it: Kimchi Potstickers "Pierogi" style. This was easily the best item of the night for me. I don't normally eat pan-fried dumplings, I usually prefer it steamed or boiled. And pierogies are something still sort of new to me. I always like to try new fillings. But, these potstickers were amazing! Maybe things do taste better with bacon! ;)

Finally, The Guest of Honour has arrived!!

The Jerk Lobster. We all were still working on the other dishes. But this plate of goodness, just in awe. We all were just taking it all in. The presence. The aroma. We're so use to eating lobster served with a lot of sauce. This one, nope! The spices used were all coated on the outside. Don't get me wrong! It's still just as good! It was a good different!

Next, came another limited of time item to order: Jamaican Oxtail Ramen Lomein. Out of all the things we've ordered for the evening, I was most looking forward to this. Who wouldn't be when Oxtail Jamaican sauce is involved?! Don't let the image fool your sight though. Between five people, this dish was just a tasting. A teaser more like it. I wanted more. If only there was more ramen. Sort of like what we've got from the chow mein. Essentially, that was my only disappointment for this dish. Perhaps, double up the amount of ramen would have been a good start.

Next, The O.G. Fried Chicken. One full order.

It comes with three different condiments/sides: sweet siracha, Thai basil, and pickled watermelon. I was really excited with the pickled watermelon part. Perhaps, it because I usually like pickled things (who doesn't love pickles?! No pun intended!). I just wished the watermelons were more pickled. It was just a light hint. Another teaser. =P

The chicken was done absolutely correct. Props to the kitchen for that! Moist and juicy on the inside, super crispy on the outside.

As soon as you think we're done with the orders, we have just one more item: Typhoon Sheltered Pork Belly. Normally, I am not too fond with pork belly because there's more fat content than meat. But these pork belly slices were done so crispy, it just melted in your mouth.

It came with a bowl of white rice sprinkled with black sesame seeds. All the bits of spices, meats, herbs that remained from The Jerk Lobster and The Pork Belly dish...the steam rice was just super handy. The best compliment one can give to a chef is how clean the plates were.

By the way, before we placed our order, and before they arrived, I had to ask our server about their dessert menu! (It's a must, right?) Especially, on their menu online, because there wasn't one! Apparently, their dessert changes quite often. This is the reason why it's not set or visible.

So, there were only two desserts to choose from. We just ordered both!

First to arrive, the Coconut-Lime Sorbet. I was told by our server that the sorbet was made just hours before the resto had opened on the day (Sunday). Talk about freshness! Wow! I must say, it was very limey! Without a doubt, very refreshing! A very good way to end a nice meal.

Lastly, we ordered two Mango Cheesecake French Toast.

Definitely, not what we all were expecting in appearance and taste. But, that's not to say it wasn't devine when it was devoured! It was definitely more of a loafy bread taste than compared with bread pudding. It was nice and fluffy. Personally, I would have wanted more mango cheesecake infused and more mango pieces as garnish. Overall, it was a nice different and I'm glad I've tried it!

Overall, my guests and I had thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Patois. The food was excellent. Atmosphere was nice. The staff (including our server) were really great! Would I recommend this place? Of course! No doubt about that! In fact, I intend to go back and try out their brunch menu. Egg Bennies over Jamaican Beef Patties, are you kidding me? Heck yes!

Until the next food journey! =)

Intro: Something Different. Change is What We Need.

Hello local foodies of Toronto (Canada) and all over the world! After much consideration, I have decided to enter the virtual world of food blogging.

A bit about yours truly. My name is Jen and I am a local and native Torontonian. Also, I am a foodie at heart. What I mean by that is I truly enjoy food! As simple as that! To me, food is essential and it's also art! I enjoy taking pictures of food and the many ways the presentation awes us. I enjoy taking pictures of what I eat, but for only safe keeping and self enjoyment. Now, that's going to change! I'm willing to share my food porn, because sharing is caring! ;)

I might not be able to provide you a restaurant's review with up-to-the-minute info. But I will guarantee you that I will write to inspire, write to entertain. My reviews on foods, restaurants, eateries, patisseries, drinks, junk foods (Yes! That too!), food fests, street fests will all be genuine and real. People often pass judgement on me at restaurants (often negative ones), and that's one of the many reasons why I've decided to start this blog. I am tired of receiving terrible service from a beautiful big city like Toronto. We need change. We need unbiased all truthful reviews. And, that's where I will step in. There will be criticism, but only constructive ones. One thing in life I value so much is that there is always room for improvement.

At the end of all this, I hope I was able to inspire or entertain one person with my writing.

Thank you for taking the time to read my first post. Please look forward to what's to come! =)
